“Growing up, I always thought art was a drawing, a painting or a piece of work that was made from scratch, through creativity. Fashion follows through all the same steps and doesn’t get half as much appreciation,” said fashion writer and critic, Alyssa Cook. One designer that’s challenging this very idea that fashion and art are less like siblings and more like distant relatives, is industry legend, Manolo Blahnik, the founder of the eponymous high-end shoe brand.

A keen appreciator of art, his signature designs can now be seen and enjoyed by like minds from all around the world, in one of London’s most prestigious museums, the Wallace Collection. From the 10th of June, to 1st of September 2019, an exhibition titled ‘An Enquiring Mind: Manolo Blahnik at the Wallace Collection’ will be showcased, featuring a carefully and personally selected edit of shoe designs from Blahnik’s private archives, amongst other masterpieces of the Wallace Collection. What’s better? This experience will be free and require no pre-booking.

The flagship event of the TKMG Art Auction house, a collaboration of two Lagos-based art galleries, Terra Kulture and Mydrim Gallery, has returned for its ninth edition!

Activities leading up to the event, which holds on Friday the 27th of July at the Terra Kulture Arena, kicked off with Collector’s Preview & Cocktail night on Friday, the 20th of July.

The preview night gave collectors a chance to view some of the pieces to be auctioned and to have the first choice come auction night. It also shows a new and emerging crop of collectors and art enthusiasts including Tokini Peterside, Dakore Egbuson, Kunle Afolayan, Sonia Irabor, Abimbola Craig, Bolanle Olukanni, Afua Osei, Yasmine Belo-Osagie, Denola Grey, Ozinna Anumudu, amongst others

Also present at the preview event were artists whose pieces will be up for auction – Kolade Oshinowo, Nse Abasi, M. Inyang, Nzennaya Barry Ikechukwu – giving them a first-hand chance to persuade Art Collectors present to buy their pieces come auction night

The event also welcomed the two winners of the Instagram Art Competition which gave winners, Prince Idiage and Laju Sholola, the opportunity to showcase their pieces to art lovers and collectors present at the preview event.

Art Auctions in Lagos are rather few and far between in the usually vibrant Lagos Art scene, but are gradually becoming some of the most drooled-over events of the thriving Art industry. This is thanks to platforms such as the TKMG Art Auction House – giving artists a chance to showcase their best pieces, and even better yet, to sell them off at as high a price as possible!

Guests can stop by the TKMG Auction House all week (from 23rd – 26th July) to view the pieces before the auction. The TKMG Auction House is located at Terra Kulture Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island Lagos.

Long gone are the days where we celebrate Nigerian food simply by enjoying it in borderline unhealthy amounts. The new breed of Nigerian artists such as Haneefah Adam, Oluwatoyin Onigbanjo, amongst many others are changing the way we see and appreciate some of the country’s most treasured staples – one grain of jollof rice at a time.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City will play host to the annual fundraising gala next month after the Met Gala theme was officially confirmed November 2017 as:

“Heavenly Bodies: fashion and the Catholic Imagination”

This year’s exhibition, as reported, will “highlight the enduring influence of religion and liturgical vestments on fashion.” The central piece is said to be papal garb on loan from the Sistine Chapel, which Vogue says has never been seen outside the Vatican. The other 150 ensembles on display will be designer garments inspired by Catholic iconography or style. Unlike previous years, “Heavenly Bodies” will be presented in three locations: the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the Met’s Fifth Avenue location and at the Cloisters. According to the New York Times, it’ll be the institutes largest (and possibly most provocative) show to date.

To make the excitement even better, the gala itself will be co-hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace, whose label is co-sponsoring the show. We can’t wait! Per usual, the Met Gala will be held on the first Monday in May and this year it will take place on May 7

The post MEET MOBOLAJI SADARE, THE AFRICAN JEWELLERY DESIGNER WITH STRIKING YET MINIMAL PIECES appeared first on SCHICK.

]]>
Moblaji Sadare’s route into the jewellery industry was no ordinary one. The self-taught, Lagos-based owner of Ōchá Jewellery, studied fashion merchandising and international business at university, then got her start as a fashion buyer and retail consultant. She made the decision to design jewellery after working on custom pieces for a womenswear designer. Mobolaji’s work is informed by her passion for collecting and her eye for the exceptional and the unexpected. Since starting her business four months ago, Mobolaji Sadare is becoming more and more recognized for unique and timeless pieces of jewellery.

With its distinctive mix of minimalism and African influences, Ōchá Jewellery has so far been under the radar but shows sign of promise and is starting to garner a following. Each piece, designed and handcrafted by the designer, aims to be a conversation-starter. Sculptural and striking in the simplest of ways, Mobolaji’s unequalled pieces are the jewellery equivalent of modern architecture. DIY and lo-fi, or highly worked masterpieces, the appeal of the hand-drawn, self-assembled approach is strong. Nothing says sophistication quite like the effortless and clean lines of a classic design. Her jewellery isn’t designed for trend-followers, it’s designed for those who want to buy jewellery they have a connection with and that will last them a lifetime. SCHICK chats to Mobolaji about upcoming trends in the jewellery industry, her love for art and the Ōchá Jewellery woman, enjoy!

Q1: When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a jewellery designer?

I’ve always been a DIY kind of girl, so I’d look at items online and try to recreate it for myself. Back in June 2017, I’d seen some earrings I loved but couldn’t get shipped to me, because Nigeria, so I just made a version for myself. Quite a few friends asked if I could make some for them after that. But I think the definitive moment was a few months later when a friend of mine, Dunni Lambo, asked if I could make some custom pieces for the SS18 collection of her label, Ladunni Lambo. I remember sitting in her studio working on the designs and deciding this was an avenue I wanted to explore properly. Dunni, and a few of my other friends were super motivating so I decided to go for it.

Q2: Who have been your biggest mentors in this industry and what is the best advice they have ever given you?

I actually haven’t had any mentors in the industry as it’s been such a short period of time since I’ve started. So far I’ve kind of been winging it (laughs). But I’d say my mom and my uncle have been amazing and supportive when it comes to giving me general business advice. It’s been truly invaluable.

Q3: Tell us about your design style. What makes your collections unique in the industry?

My pieces are something I like to call ‘African minimalist’. Sounds contrary, I know, because those two terms imply two very different things. But I like to work with simple, interesting silhouettes that include bright colours (which is where I think the African comes in). I think that that fusion of African and minimalism is something that sets me apart from other brands.

Q4: What kind of person wears your jewellery?

Women who love adding conversation pieces to their outfits, and who appreciate out-of-the-box designs.

Q5: As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration from?

All over the place. I do particularly like drawing inspiration from product design and architecture. One of my designs, the Anaïs, was inspired by a light bulb. Another, Noro, was inspired by archways.

Q6: What’s it like to see someone on the street wearing one of your creations?

It’s such a great feeling. The best way to describe it would be a mix of elation and disbelief.

Q7: What is your favourite piece you’ve ever created – and what made it so special?

That’s a really tough one. Probably has to be Thando or Noro. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s because they are not common silhouettes.

Q8: What are upcoming trends in the jewellery design industry?

Pearls are making a comeback I believe. Also, statement abstract designs, mismatched earrings, clear resin, and baroque designs.

Q9: Who are your favourite designers?

Definitely Annie Costello Brown. Her Matisse inspired pieces are a dream. Also, Luiny for their interesting shapes, and Dinosaur Designs for their use of colour.

Q10: What advice would you give to someone interested in getting into the jewellery design business?

Start with what you have and build from there. Also, trust your instincts when it comes to your designs.

Q11: You’re also an artist, which we find incredible! How do you navigate the art world in Africa?

I experiment with all forms of art; photography, graphic design, painting, drawing. I’m trying out sculpture for the first time. So that’s a bit daunting. However, I do see the sculptures as an extension of my jewellery design.

Q12: Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your path as an artist?

No, not really. I’ve always just created because I wanted to. But it did lead me to study fashion at university.

Q13: Which artist of the past would you most like to meet?

Probably Salvatore Dali. It would be interesting to see the way his mind works and what his artistic process is like. And Da Vinci because he’s probably the most talented man that’s ever lived, in my opinion.

Q14: What visual references do you draw upon in your work?

In my art, it really depends on my mood, but I do like lots of abstract, and geometric shapes.

Q15: If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career what would it be?

You’re going to be all over the place, and that’s fine. As long as you have purpose.

Braiding is universal — but it strikes a particularly intimate chord with African-American women, and this is what Chicago-based artist Shani Crowe dedicates to and looking to change the perception of braids. As she states in the notes for her photography exhibit, ‘Braids,’ which is on display at MoCADA (the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) in Brooklyn. The collection of images highlights insanely detailed and intricate braided ‘dos, which Crowe created after years and years of practice. Crowe enlisted the help of friends to model her creations. She also photographed, edited, and braided each and every look herself.

According to her:

“BRAIDS is a series of photographic portraits celebrating the beauty and nuanced artistry of hair braiding. Influenced by an Afro-centric, non-linear time sense where past, present, and future are intertwined and concurrent, BRAIDS draws from a variety of eras. It is an amalgamation of inspiration from ancient artifacts, traditional African braid styles, popular culture, and Afro-futurism, filtered through my perspective. Each portrait can be appreciated at face value, but the imagery conjures a specific nostalgia for African American women who remember both having their hair braided and braiding someone else’s. The opportunity for deeper understanding among Black Women allows a paradigm shift, where a group seen as a double minority has an inherent advantage. By referencing an intergenerational collective memory, seated in the crest of the Black feminine experience, I create an instance of privilege.”

People from all over the world can now view the works of the late Yves Saint Laurent for themselves as the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation has opened a museum in Paris in honour of the designer’s contribution to the world of fashion. The YSL museum is located at 5 Avenue Marceau in the hotel where Yves Saint Laurent had his atelier between 1974 until his retirement in 2002. As they step into the museum, visitors are greeted with one of Yves Saint Laurent’s famous quotes, “Les modes passent, le style est éternal” which translates into English as “Fashion fades, but style is eternal”.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to enter Yves Saint Laurent’s personal studio. The display of the designer’s very first collection in 1962 and many of his other inaugural and revolutionary pieces will run until the 9th of September, 2018.
