Last weekend, at the Civic Center in Victoria Island, Lagos, Art X , the rapidly emerging annual art fair concentrating on the West African region came to life again, packed full with some of the best contemporary art in West Africa as 14 selected galleries drawn from Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, and the United Kingdom presented at the second edition of the Art X Lagos. The first edition of Art X Lagos took place in 2016, attracting 5,000 visitors and the work of 65 artists but the second edition of the outstanding event brought an even larger crowd. The aim of the international art fair is to showcase the best and most innovative contemporary art from the African continent, and also widen Nigeria’s connection to the art scene across Africa and globally. A few remarkable artists graced the occasion and the line-up included globally renowned artist and sculptor Yinka Shonibare MBE, as well as Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Jeremiah Quarshie (Ghana), Modupeola Fadugba (Nigeria), Nandipha Mntambo (Swaziland), Virginia Chihota(Zimbabwe), Boris Nzebo (Cameroon), Babajide Olatunji(Nigeria), Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (Botswana), Amadou Sanogo (Mali) and Portia Zvavahera (Zimbabwe).
