YOU’VE SHARED POSTS ABOUT UWA AND TINA – NOW WHAT?

A few days ago we all woke up to follow our normal routine as we opened social media, instead of the usual array of self-proclamation; beaming golden hour selfies and OOTD inspiration, we were met with posts from the entire global community pouring outrage over the tragic death of Uwavera Omozuwa, 22, and Tina Ezekwe, 16.

Uwa, a student who was brutally raped and murdered in Benin City and Tina, who was killed by a drunk police officer in Lagos. A common factor between both ladies is they both suffered at the hands of unjust brutality by men.

It’s been a multitude of people doing the same thing, condoning the actions of men, raising awareness and calling law enforcement to action – and rightly so, but where do we go from here?

We have seen that when women come together, it is an unstoppable force, but now, we ALL need to come together, both men and women. We need men in our society to be allies and not supporters, men need to consciously encourage their brothers and friends to un-learn, re-learn and do better. We need to change the narrative towards sexual-based violence in Africa.

Yes, change starts with awareness and acknowledgement, and that’s we’ve done an amazing job doing that, but we can’t stop there. We need to rally and make policymakers hear us. We need to make sure this case doesn’t disappear like every other cases. Follow and support agencies that advocate and provide resources to help fight sexual harassment.

We cannot fail anymore girl child, we cannot fail ourselves.
