When you think minimal you think “less is more”, “space”, “clutter free”, “neutral colour palette” and more words that describe less extravagant and much organised. The minimalist approach to a living space is known for its benefits like time-saving and just extra air to breathe. The minimalist space is easy to clean and makes it easy to locate objects around your home among a list of benefits. Here are items and things to consider while incorporating the minimalist approach to your living space.

COLOUR PALETTE

The general mindset for a minimalist space colour palette is black and white, which really isn’t right. The keywords in the definition of minimal is “minimum amount”; you can take your favourite yellow shade and put that on your wall, but make sure it is minimum and balanced with a neutral colour that matches. The colour tones that you choose need to be maintained all through the space as well because you want to keep it simple and less dramatic.

STORAGE CONTAINERS

The key to a minimal space is to be clutter free, you need to get rid of things you do not need and put the things you need in storage containers that blend with your colour scheme. This makes it easier to spot items around your space while looking neat without scattering or changing the position of things.

CREATE A BALANCED SPACE WITH FURNITURE

After getting rid of clutter and painting your living area with neutral tones, you discover your space would seem bigger than you thought. You would have room and what you want to do is not congest your space or make it look off; and so, while arranging your furniture, you should have in mind that your space needs to be balanced either asymmetrically or symmetrically.

SHELVES

The shelves are a part of furniture which can serve as storage depending on how you look at it; they help to keep items in plain sight while also giving a facial uplift to the space. The colour of the shelves needs to blend with the colour scheme of your space, here you can place décor, photo frames, books and many more.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO INCORPORATE PLANTS

This is dependent on how much sun gets in your living room, you might want to bring in some plants to have a cleaner and very natural feel to it. It gets better when you can play around with the outlook of the plant pots to fit your colour scheme.

ACCESSORIES?

You don’t want a bland space with the colour coordination and arrangement, you can give your living space a face lift by introducing paintings, vases, frames, bowls that are not outrageously or extravagantly designed or coloured.

The post 5 WAYS TO CREATE AN ETHNIC LIVING ROOM appeared first on SCHICK.

]]>
If you’re looking to add some warmth, interest and relaxing comfort to your living room, ethnic chic is where you should look. This type of interior décor is welcoming and warm and can be mixed and matched with other styles until you drop (even minimalism and modernism!). So, if you like how that sounds so far, here are a few tips on creating an ethnic living room that will definitely make you go on a little remodelling journey.

Find the right colour palette

When people think about ethnic décor, they instantly envision warm colours like burnt oranges, vibrant yellows and deep reds. They remind us of African sunsets, Australian soil and South American terracotta art. So, make sure to add these colours into your living room for a warm and welcoming vibe. These colours are also a perfect backdrop for all other ethnic elements in your home.

Welcome textures to your space

Various textures not only add depth and interest to your space, but they also have a very strong ethnic feel. Natural materials like wood, rattan, leather, feathers and jute can paint an especially beautiful picture of the nation’s folklore and tradition. Plus, these materials are very flexible and can be incorporated into your home in many ways. From wall art to throw pillows, different textures can create an interesting and versatile ethnic living room.

Find your accent pieces

Ethnic and Boho designs are all about accessories. Each of your carefully picked out accents will tell a story and breathe some tradition into your space, no matter if you choose tribal sculptures of Africa or wicker plates of Asia. Probably the easiest way to incorporate ethnic accent pieces into your living room is to create a table centrepiece. For instance, if you want to keep the vintage or rustic feel in your home, invest in Wedgewood dinnerware set, as it will give your dining room that vintage Americana look while making it feel fabulously modern too!

Don’t forget the furniture

You don’t have to completely replace your old sofa and armchairs with new items to add some ethnic flair to your space. By adding smaller furniture pieces to your existing setup, you can easily transform the space for very little money. For instance, cute Moroccan tabouret and side table will add some interest to your space without overly expensive investments and an Eastern European antique dowry box can be a great addition to your space, because it can be used as seating and storage. You can also try a bit of DIY and create completely unique furniture pieces for your living room. Here’s a great idea: check out salvage yards for old Indian doorways, repaint them and turn them into big free-standing mirrors. As long as you think outside the box, you’ll manage to create an amazing ethnic interior for very little money.

Don’t forget the floors

One of the easiest ways to inject some ethnic vibes into your space is to adorn your floors with an appropriate carpet. You can go with everything from intricate Persian rugs to minimalist geometric Moroccan ones, depending on your overall home aesthetics. If you want to add some colour into your space, Mexican rugs will be just the thing you need. They are also usually made with natural dyes, so you don’t have to worry about being eco-friendly.

All in all, these ethnic colours and décor elements will instantly transport you to their place of origin! Plus, you’ll feel like a citizen of the world and create a much stronger bond with your own roots.

Wherever you are: a tiny office, bedroom, living room or kitchen, you should feel at home and in charge of your environment. Gone are those days where your office space, living room or bedrooms are full of sappy pieces. Here are some simple decorating tips to spruce up your space.

1. Don’t sacrifice comfort

Yes. You might want the most classy, flashy couch in the showroom but your back may not! Be sure to always opt for furniture that’s comfortable but also makes “relaxation”… relaxing.

2. Choose a colour scheme and go with it.

Remember to always pick out a colour or colours that express your style and your personality. But don’t go crazy with the colours, stick to 2 or 3, no more.

3. Pick one piece of artwork to anchor the room.

Search for artwork with dimensions, colours and has a tip of something that is of grave importance to you. You could make the artwork the focal point of the room.

4. Add Fruit

Fruits aren’t just healthy snacks, they also add vibrant colours to the room. Create a centrepiece with fresh fruits to bring vibrancy to your kitchen.

5. Switch up the classics

Change your plain bathroom tiles to patterns, bold prints and bright colours or also hang photographs or artwork.

6. Keep bedroom fabrics simple.

According to Benjamin Noriega-Oritz, people should add patterns to their bedroom and not the fabrics.

7. Create an inviting foyer with mirrors.

Your foyer is the first place people see, we suggest you make it homely with a mirror and furnishings and maybe a chandelier if you want that bourgeoisie finishing.

8. Light up your world

Do not overlook lighting when decorating a room. A statement chandelier or lamp takes a design to the next level.

Whether hanging or potted in your bedroom, houseplants are actually very beneficial for a good night’s sleep, plus they add life to your bedroom. A study by NASA has shown that certain plants can purify the air in our homes, and are great for preventing colds and allergies, while the aromas of others are known for their relaxing capabilities. It’s a great time to try your hands at some indoor gardening with added health benefits. These are the eight best houseplants for your bedroom which may just make you sleep a little more soundly tonight.

NO. 1: ARECA PALM

The Areca palm plant is great decor for your home, plus the added air purification benefits make it even better. This plant works wonders if you suffer from regular colds or sinus trouble as they release moisture into the air which should make it easier to breathe while nodding off.

NO. 2: ALOE VERA

NASA named Aloe vera as one of the best plants for air purification in its study because of its ability to release oxygen throughout the night. The bonus is that these plants are also super easy to look after and they look beyond beautiful.

NO. 3: ENGLISH IVY

A study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reported that English ivy removed 94% of airborne feces and 78% of airborne mold in just 12 hours. So, if you suffer from allergies, stocking up on some of these beautiful plants could keep your sneezing at bay overnight.

NO. 4. GERBERA

Gerbera daisies brighten up your room and also clean up the air in your bedroom so breathing in your sleep is easy.

NO. 5: JASMINE

Jasmine will not only make your room smell delightful, but Psychologists at Wheeling Jesuit University found that those exposed to the scent of jasmine also had a better quality of sleep than those who weren’t.

NO. 6: LAVENDER

Lavender has been used in aromatherapy as a natural aid to sleep for years. It doesn’t get more relaxing than lavender and is a staple for a great night’s sleep.

NO. 7: MOTHER-IN-LAW’S TONGUE

Mother-in-law’s tongue is a glossy-leaf plant that emits oxygen through the night while taking in carbon dioxide. It is a great plant that also filters nasty common household toxins like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and benzene from the air.

NO. 8: PEACE LILY

The peace lily is an all-in-one plant that you definitely need in your bedroom. It purifies the air by removing toxins and increases the humidity of the air. This could help reduce allergies and ease dry throats or sinus problems, thus helping you to drift off trouble-free.

The post 9 EXPERT TIPS FOR DECORATING YOUR FIRST HOME appeared first on SCHICK.

]]>
Picking your first home, whether as a single individual or as a couple, is one of the most important choices of your life. (No pressure here.) You’ve saved long and hard, spent countless lunch breaks scouring the Internet for new home listings, and finally found the perfect location (or at least one you can tolerate). So, why shouldn’t you go the extra mile to make it look and feel special?

Have no fear; expert tips are here. The good people at the hub of furnishing and decoration, Homify, have excellent expert tips to help you turn your house into a home without losing your mind completely.

START NEUTRAL

A good place to start is a good, neutral palate to get you off the ground. “Choosing whites and blacks, timber tones and everything in between we think is a wise initial decision. Neutral tones will always work, and can always be easily dressed up with a dash of colour in elements such as floor rugs or cushions in the future,” say the furnishing experts.

MAKE LISTS – LOTS OF THEM

There should be no shame in your game when it comes to careful planning and budgeting for your first house. “You cannot simply dive in and ‘wing it’. Write down all the items you currently own, write down all the items you need, and write a wish list of things you would love to own in the future.”

INVEST IN QUALITY BEDDING

Considering the fact that you will spend a third of your life in bed, it’s very wise to own some quality bedding you can comfortably sink into. But don’t scrimp on a good bed, either, say the experts, as it’s essential for a comfy life.

HAVE A BUDGET

Oh, the temptation to splurge on lush furniture and pricey decorations, but avoid getting into debt (you just paid for a house) by blowing the budget. And if you don’t have a budget, this is a good time to make one. “When you go shopping for new furniture and decorations, it’s easy to become overexcited and spend money you don’t have. Don’t let a showroom or a salesperson let you go over your budget, and shop around for deals and value for money. And, if you have some money to spare after sticking to your budget, you can happily buy something from your wishlist without the guilt.”

KNOW YOUR ROOM DIMENSIONS

While this might seem a little obvious, you would be surprised at how easy it is to buy a couch that can’t fit through your front door or into your living room space. Ensure you have all the dimensions of your rooms and the doors so you can comfortably get all the furniture in.

AVOID BUYING EVERYTHING AT ONCE

One of the biggest secrets to know when moving into your first home? You don’t need a fully furnished 5-star flat in the blink of an eye. “Of course, if you are going to get a discount for buying lots furnishings for one room in bulk, for example, then go crazy. But as a general rule, it is better to shop around to see what is available, and to live in your home for a period of time before deciding what you actually need, and what will work best etc.”

PAINT, PAINT, PAINT

It’s the easiest, least expensive, most impactful way to bring life to any living space. Choose colours that reflect your personality and suit the mood of the room you’re decorating.

TAKE IT ONE ROOM AT A TIME

Baby steps… Tiny droplets… All the sayings are true when it comes to taking on a big project. It’s okay not to have the home of your dreams in one month (read and repeat aloud). “Spread it out over time, and break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. The overwhelming cost or fear of getting it ‘right’ will be suppressed if you take your time, and do it one room at a time.”

DON’T BE AFRAID TO MIX AND MATCH

Unsure of exactly how to decorate your new place? The experts suggest you opt for a mixed-and-matched theme, changing it up often with smaller decorative elements until you find what works best for you in your new home.
