HBO teams up with Yvonne Orji for an hour-long comedy special with Orji taking the centre stage wearing her other hat as a stand-up comedian. The special includes footage shot both in Nigeria and the United States of America. From the released trailer, you can see Yvonne taking her audience back to her hometown in Nigeria as she gives a back story on her life and how her ideologies were shaped; she then takes her viewers on a journey she ends at the Howard Theatre in the DMV.

Momma, I Made It! premiers on HBO on the 6th of June and will be available to stream on HBO max. It was either this or medical school.

The special episode included an overview of “A Common Thread”, an initiative which aims to raise awareness and discuss ways to raise funds to tackle the effects of COVID-19 on the fashion industry.

The intimate, live-streamed daily series encourages fans to stay home and save lives during this critical period. It also focuses on in-depth career-spanning conversations between Naomi and a close group of her friends, from media personalities to designers and beauty gurus.

The series debuted on the 6th of April and has so far, had a 12-weekday series that featured Cindy Crawford, Marc Jacobs, Nicole Richie, Ashley Graham, Pierpaolo Piccoli, Lee Daniels, Christy Turlington, Adut Akech, Sharon Stone, Paris Hilton, Serena & Venus Williams, and Karlie Kloss as guests.

The series, produced by Westbrook Media, continues on weekdays and will be rounded off on Friday, April 24th, 2020 with future guests to be announced.

Over the last couple of weeks, the MD Instagram page has been used to promote cleanliness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, however the company’s leap to sanitiser production is the latest in their endeavours. In an interview with Sowetan Live, Dlamini says, “it is something that was in the pipeline as a way to grow and diversify the MD product offering.”

“With the emergence of the pandemic, we sought to steamroll the rollout of the sanitisers to help with prevention and further the efforts by government and other business to create access to them and promote hygiene. Our sanitisers have an alcohol base of 70%.”

While the new product will be made available for sale post-lockdown, it’s been revealed that the first batch of hand sanitisers will be distributed at no cost to underprivileged and underserved communities in South Africa (identified by the Red Cross), to assist with a shortage in supply.

Daniel Kaluuya discusses how he interpreted the role as a British actor and how he feels about the comparison of characters, Slim and Queen, to the infamous duo, Bonnie and Clyde.

On getting comfortable with African-American roles

“That’s our job as actors – to use who we are to show you who were not. So, I have to tap in and find parallels between me and the person I’m playing. It’s also important to be respectful and specific to the person and the culture I’m representing – whether it’s someone from Cleveland or someone from Zanzibar. It’s important to understand the humanity and find out the thing that I can translate and tap into. I have to think: If I watched it from Camden, would I understand [the experiences shared in the film]? If I was from Cleveland, especially [where the film is set], would I be able to resonate?”

Bonnie and Clyde committed crimes but for Slim and Queen, their skin was criminalised

You and Jodie’s characters in Queen & Slim have been compared to Bonnie and Clyde – but they were outlaws and you, in every sense, were not. How does that comparison make you feel?

“Well, I think it’s not accurate – that’s what it is. It’s a reductive way to describe it but I understand why people would go with that narrative – because [Slim and Queen] become a couple [on the run]. What our goal was was to introduce a new archetype in that space – especially from a Black perspective. Like you said, Bonnie and Clyde committed crimes but for Slim and Queen, their skin was criminalised – it’s why they were in that situation. So, it’s different.”

Do you think Queen & Slim would have been different if it was written and directed by men?

“Absolutely. I think any story is going to be affected by its creators because it’s told through their lens and through their pen, so there’s going to be a huge difference. [For Queen & Slim] I couldn’t tell you exactly how, though! And I also think it would be different if it was another black woman; this story is very much a representation of who I am, my instincts, influences, experiences, as well as Lena’s and Daniel’s and Jodie’s. We are the creators of this narrative and because of that, it’s always going to reflect who we are as people.”

Did anything surprise you about the reaction to the film?

“Yeah! I think what surprised me most was how deeply it resonated  with audiences – how much conversation it caused both on and offline. I had never seen such a reaction caused by a film – sometimes more of a reaction than people actually being killed in the street, you know? And this came just from representation on screen. I think that speaks to how deeply it hit and how much people connect to and see themselves in this story.”

What strikes you most about Yvonne is how funny, yet totally down-to-earth, relatable and wise she is. At various points, the 36-year-old inserted some truly powerful thoughts into her speech, so much so that it would almost be criminal not to share. So, here they are:

On success and failure:
