Throwback to the days when you come home after a great night out, peel those lashes off and leave them on the bathroom sink for another few days. Remember them? But best believe there’s a better way to take care of these beauty favourites. The fact is your extensions will last longer if you take care of them properly.

Whether you apply them at home or have them professionally done, here are the lash care tips you need to know:

Avoid perms and tints: Do not perm or tint lashes after lash extension application.

You can forego the curlers: Do not use a regular eyelash curler to curl extensions.

Be careful when cleansing: Avoid rubbing your eyes or lashes when washing your face. When cleansing, clean around the eyes with a washcloth.

Remove with caution: Do not pull your lash extensions, as it will most likely take out your own lash as well (ouch!).

Avoid extremely high temperatures: For at least 48 hours, avoid going into a Sauna while wearing eyelash extensions.

Be careful when getting wet: To keep your lashes looking great, it’s advisable you do not get them wet at all for at least 24 hours.

Wearing mascara: If you choose to wear mascara, only apply to the tips and use water-based mascara that washes off easily.

Groom with caution: Brush and groom your lashes gently with a disposable mascara spoolie (the little mascara wand-style brush) or eye shadow brush.

Sleeping with lash extensions: Try to sleep on your back or side to avoid smashing your lashes completely as you sleep.

Touch with caution: When you touch your lashes, always use upward, sweeping motions – no side to side rubbing at the lash line. Also, remember to keep your fingers off your lashes; every time you touch them you are transferring natural oil and germs.

Happy lashes make a happy face!

The cost of your favourite beauty buys goes way beyond what you actually pay for it; in some instances, the lives of little children are lost just so it can get into your hands. In a shocking exposé reported by Refinery29, as part of their ‘Shady’ series, Senior Beauty Editor, Lexy Lebsack explores the unethically sourced ingredient that’s in almost all makeup products – mica.

It’s what gives your eyeshadow that shimmer and your blush that glow, but the truth about where it comes from will shock you. Mining mica has such massive health hazards (including respiratory illnesses, serious injury and even death) involved that British cosmetics chain, LUSH decided to forego this mineral entirely in their production and opt for a synthetic alternative, in a bid to promote ethical responsibility.

Watch as Lebsack travels to mica mines in India to uncover the truth about the child labour rings behind its production and distribution:

In the not-so-great state the world is right now – with almost every major city being on lockdown, there is a long list of positives that are waiting to be explored by you. Personally, I choose to see this as the long-anticipated break I had been craving from the daily hustle and bustle; I had been really stressed it affected my physical appearance among other things and so during this compulsory holiday, I have focused a great deal on my nutrition.

Another area I would like to focus on will be skincare, doing (at least) a 14-day routine can improve your appearance and it’s time enough for you to build a healthy skincare habit. Beauty influencer and Makeup Artist, Dodos shares her nightly facial skincare routine which you can adopt or personalise depending on your preference or budget, see video below.

Men are increasingly conscious consumers and are more aware than ever about wellness and the authenticity of the everyday beauty products they use. Men’s personal care has become a multi-billion-dollar growth opportunity for today’s beauty industry, with male targeted skincare products on the rise.

With health-conscious skin care products on the increase, this leads us into our conversation with Mr Blackman’s beard range for Black and mixed-race men. The brand creates earth-conscious products for men who want to look good, with the urban gent in mind. The brand won the Best Beard Oil title in 2018 and was a finalist in Best Men’s Shaving Products category in the Beauty Shortlist Awards.

SCHICK Contributor, Lawrencia Nelson spoke to Marc Belle, the brand’s Creative Director about how the company is redefining the men’s grooming industry.

As the nights draw in, it's time to get cozy.

A post shared by Mr Blackman's (@mrblackmans) on

What inspired you to create Mr Blackman’s?

I had been given some beard oil when I started to grow a beard but I didn’t really feel it worked, so I had a look around for something more specific for my own hair type but still find anything. I found one brand in America but I couldn’t find anything in the UK and questioned why were there all these beard companies and none of them catered for men with afro or mixed-race hair.

I did a bit of research to understand what my hair actually needed and decided to experiment. I tried to make it smell a bit like a bottle of shower gel I had (it smelt nothing like it!) but people really liked it, so I started giving them away. I then had people getting in touch asking where they could buy it. That is how the brand started.

When did you first realise you wanted to create a skincare brand for men with curly and afro hair?

I’m not sure it was ever a thought to be in the beard or skincare industry. In fact, just hearing that still sounds strange! My job is problem-solving, usually with limited resources. That’s what we set out to do; it just happens that the problem was one that myself and other men with curly and afro hair have. There have been other problems that we’ve tried to tackle as well — environmental issues and men’s health, especially in the Afro-Caribbean community.

How has the brand evolved since it started back in 2016?

The look of the brand has definitely evolved over time; mostly as we found where we fit in the market. When the brand first started, there was only one product putting us firmly in the beard brand market, but as time has gone on, that has evolved and we look at ourselves less as a beard brand and more as a men’s brand, whether that’s making cosmetics for men or promoting men’s positivity.

Hello Monday! ✊🏾

A post shared by Mr Blackman's (@mrblackmans) on

What are Black and mixed-race men seeking in grooming and how did you choose to address it?

I think we’ve all had similar experiences, where products just weren’t designed to handle the problems that black or mixed-race men have. We spend a lot of time developing the right product for the right job – asking questions, speaking to our customers about what they would like and what they need. We’re also aware that men typically don’t want to spend a lot of time on grooming, so we try to simplify it by creating multipurpose products where possible. We want it to be no fuss!

Let’s discuss the product range. Can you explain what distinguishes the brand from other men’s skincare brands?

There are lots of brands making products for men which are also sticking closely to natural raw products and avoiding mineral oils, sulphates and other ingredients like that. It’s not surprising, given people’s change in attitudes to both food and cosmetics and wanting cleaner products, but there are also lots of brands that complicate all this too.

Mr Blackman’s has a passion for going back to basics and believes nature often provides for most things. In Barbados, people will cut open an aloe plant and wash their hair with the gel inside or use it to treat sunburn. People have sea baths and there is a plant out there for just about every allergy or skin condition, and we use that.

The products are simple and we don’t add every ingredient under the sun just because it’s on trend or so that we can inflate the price of something. The aim is to make high quality, premium products more accessible to everyone and level the playing field.

Where do you see the brand in the next 5 years and how do you hope to impact the men’s skincare industry?

That’s a big question. If you had asked 5 years ago if I would be doing this, I would have laughed! They say in business you should have a 5 and 10-year plan, but the truth is we are just trying to do what we think is right. Cleaner products, cleaner planet and spread some positivity.

What has been the biggest achievement for the brand so far?

That we got this far! We have won awards, which is always nice, but people really seem to like what we do, this little brand from Barbados. We’ve got repeat customers and people cheering us on, asking us to create a plethora of products. So, we’re working on it! That’s got to be the biggest achievement for us because if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be here.

Find out more about the brand!

The post WHICH ONE OF THESE SUPER COMMON BEAUTY MISTAKES IS MAKING YOU LOOK OLDER? appeared first on SCHICK.

]]>
Yes, it’s possible that in 2020, you’re still unknowingly buying the wrong foundation shade for your skin tone, or using brow powder that’s leaving you looking washed out. Makeup is meant to enhance your already beautiful features, rather than make you look like an older version of yourself. Avoid these beauty mistakes, and you’ll be looking your best!

Wearing the wrong foundation colour

This is still one of the most common beauty errors – even with the presence of product ranges that are far more diverse and inclusive. Wearing foundation that doesn’t match your skin colour can add years to your face, instead of giving you a more even look. If you go lighter than your tone, your look may appear lifeless and flat, whereas going too dark can add dullness and heaviness to you look, just as ageing tends to do. To avoid this mistake, make sure you test foundation before you purchase it, or ask for professional advice.

Choosing lipstick that’s too dark

While the deep purples, blacks and reds are definitely in right now, choosing a lip colour that is too dark for your skin is likely to pile on the years. Dark shades tend to make lips look smaller, less plump and less highlighted – all natural signs of ageing. Not to worry, this doesn’t mean you should stay away from dark lip colours! But if you’re concerned about appearing older than you are, go for lip colours with a lighter texture or without a matte finish. Consider trying a mauve or pink tone instead.

Lining only the bottom lid

Lining both your top and bottom eyelid with liner is a beauty essential. Although it might be easier to line only the bottom, it will make your eyes appear smaller, drag your features down, and overall, make you appear older. When both lids are lined, it opens up your eyes and brightens your face.

Applying the wrong blush shade

Many women tend to choose shades of blush that end up either looking muddy and dull or too soft in colour, which can age your look. Finding the right shade to match your tone is essential to looking your best. When applying, also make sure you start at the height of the apple of your cheek, and blend it up and back. This will give your features a lift.

Not defining your eyebrows

Over the years, your eyebrows tend to thin out from over-plucking or just much slower growth. Not filling them out with a brow pencil or brow powder can leave you looking washed out and older, whereas a full brow will give your face a lift, define your features and create a more youthful appearance.

Nigerian-born British fashion designer, Duro Olowu has had an impact on the international fashion scene since 2005 with his “larger than life” prints but his eponymous brand took it to the next level by collaborating with one of the world’s leading manufacturers, Estée Lauder. Duro described the new collection as, “…ageless, glowing makeup for all skin tones,” while Estée Lauder calls it, “a dynamic new expression of fashion and beauty.”

Though the duo released the makeup collection last year, but recently teamed up with Nigeria’s top creatives, and worked with the Estée Lauder Nigeria team, to translate the spirit behind this amazing collection into a bold and bright photo shoot.

“I really want you to be able to look at [it] and have it bring you much joy. Women should always feel confident and cosmopolitan in the makeup they wear,” says Olowu about the #EsteexDuro collection, which just launched at Essenza stores in Nigeria.

The post 5 SELF-CARE BRANDS EVERY BLACK GIRL NEEDS TO KNOW NOW appeared first on SCHICK.

]]>
Self-care is everything nowadays, and the importance of wellness is constantly being reinforced. The rise of clean beauty products, green brands and vegan labels are dominating the beauty circuit. More women of colour are becoming conscious of the products they use for their skin and hair; gone are the days where WOC were limited for choice and subject to harsh ingredients incompatible with our delicate melanin skin or hair type.

Now, there new products being created everyday that specifically cater to Black girls’ needs, as widely diverse as they are. But with so many options, where do you start from? Here are five beauty brands I’d recommend, this year:

Luxemore London

Luxemore London is a wellness brand with products that are vegan and natural. The brand caters for hair, skin and even beards, which the modern, groomed man will love. The British brand, which has also been established in Africa, has become popular for its 100% natural ingredients 0% silicones, sulphates and parabens. If you are looking for an organic brand that will help you look and feel your best, look no further.

Treasure Tress

Treasure Tress is the subscription service that comes in three different beauty boxes, including the ‘Mini Box,’ ‘Tween Box’ and ‘Qween Box’ – with new products to discover each month. What I love about Treasure Tress is not only the ease with which you can order, but also that it’s a hub for women of colour to learn, explore and cater for our needs. From providing fun events, to pop up shops, the brand reinforces sisterhood and a safe space for all women who strive to celebrate their authentic selves.

R&R Luxury

The natural African skincare brand, founded by Beauty entrepreneur Valerie Obaze, has successfully created a range of enriching products. Staying true to the brands ethos and using natural ingredients such as Shea Butter, the brand produces face and body oils, scrubs and butters. R&R Luxury, which has won a plethora of awards for its genuine authenticity, also caters to men and babies, which is great for mothers-to-be.

Jacqs

The founder behind the brand is Barbara Jacques, who strives to help women look and feel comfortable in their own skin. The ethically and environmentally friendly brand seeks to eliminate harsh additives and only uses organic products in creating its moisturisers, face cleansers, body oils and more. Jacqs was birthed in 2012 from Jacques’ personal experiences: finding out she had an ovarian tumour during her first pregnancy. She hopes not only to help women look good but also educate them on the importance of wellness through a healthy lifestyle.

Bourn Beautiful Naturals

Bourn Beautiful Naturals, a Black-owned company founded by Kadian Pow, is a vegan-friendly, conscious wellness brand that creates handmade products. The British brand specialises in natural curly, coily and kinky hair and sensitive skincare products. With the able to shipp products to destinations worldwide, the BBN tribe keeps growing, teeming with women who are invested in sustainable living.
