GOOGLE CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH #THEMOSTSEARCHED CAMPAIGN

Black History Month was created to increase awareness of the significant contributions made by African Americans throughout the history of the United States, and honour their achievements. This year, the theme is “African Americans and the Vote,” which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment that gave African American men the right to vote.

In an official statement on the White House website, President Donald Trump wrote, “Through bravery, perseverance, faith, and resolve ??? often in the face of incredible prejudice and hardship ??? African Americans have enhanced and advanced every aspect of American life.?? Their fight for equality, representation, and respect motivates us to continue working for a more promising, peaceful, and hopeful future for every American. ”

Google, this month, is celebrating some of America’s most significant Black figures, from Civil Rights champions, to athletes, entertainers and authors, with the release of a new ad, tagged ‘The Most Searched’. In a statement, the company wrote, “This Black History Month, we???re celebrating some of #TheMostSearched moments and individuals in America. To find them, we used U.S.-based Google Trends Data to identify Black American achievements that were searched more than any others between January 1, 2004 ??? when U.S. Search Data first became available ??? and July 1, 2019. Here???s to the history makers and all those they continue to inspire.”

We will reach that world only when we respect black critique as a vital and necessary aspect of black excellence

But it’s very important that history is be remembered with accuracy, as is pointed out by CNN columnist, Richard J. Reddick. He writes, “For virtually all of the icons in the 90-second clip, I also could recount examples of how many of these same heroes were pressured into silence – to not use their wisdom, prominence and sense of justice — and not apply systemic critiques of American society and advocate for equality.” Further, Reddick says, “We will reach that world only when we respect black critique as a vital and necessary aspect of black excellence.”

The advert features Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, LeBron James, Serena Williams, John Legend, Simone Biles and many others.
