MALAWIAN DESIGNER, LINDA KHUMBANYIWA IS TELLING A STORY ROOTED IN CRAFTSMANSHIP, CULTURE & CONSCIOUSNESS ONE STITCH AT A TIME

Lynne Kayenne Studio is a Malawian contemporary womenswear brand infusing heritage, culture and craftsmanship to create timeless, vibrant garments and accessories for fashion enthusiasts. Their eco-friendly pieces are handmade in Malawi, with the vision to impact the local community. According to the official website, “Our vision is to share our Malawian fashion point of view, promoting vibrant, ethical garments and beauty with the world by sharing our craftsmanship, culture and heritage by sharing authentic Malawian stories.”

“I wanted to tell the story of their lives, tap into our rich Malawian history, take pride in our identity and share it with the world”

In the spirit of celebrating the country’s history and traditions, founder, Linda Khumbanyiwa says the SS21 collection is inspired by the Maravi Empire, a centralised system of government established in southern Africa about 1480. “When I started creating this collection, I wanted to celebrate and pay homage to our ancestors from the Maravi Empire. Just as a tree without a root eventually dies, I wanted to tell the story of their lives, tap into our rich Malawian history, take pride in our identity and share it with the world.”

Bringing the conversation back to here and now, Khumbanyiwa reveals, “I also strongly believe that creativity has to reflect the times and there’s been no time like the present, with a global pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement asking us all to question what we believe and what is important. I want this collection to offer some light and hope by telling a story that is rooted in pride, heritage and the culture of the motherland.”
