What was meant to be the start of a relaxing weekend ended up being a shock-filled one for millions of people around the world, when the news of actor, Chadwick Boseman’s death broke. The 43-year-old, who reportedly died after battling with colon cancer for four years, was best known and loved for his historic role as Marvel’s Black Panther, but he was much more than that. With several achievements, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (2019) and MTV Movie Award for Best Hero (2018) under his belt, one of his greatest accomplishments was still the ability to make an impact, especially with words.

Read below some of his most famous, most inspirational remarks on power, battling fear and living with purpose:

On being an artist

“I’m an artist. Artists don’t need permission to work. Regardless of whether I’m acting or not, I write. I write when I’m tired in fact, because I believe your most pure thoughts surface.”

On heroes and villains

“The only difference between a hero and the villain is that the villain chooses to use that power in a way that is selfish and hurts other people.”

On fear

“Fearlessness means taking the first step, even if you don’t know where it will take you. It means being driven by a higher purpose, rather than by applause. It means knowing that you reveal your character when you stand apart, more than when you stand with the crowd.”

On living purposefully

“When you are deciding on next steps, next jobs, next careers, further education, you should rather find purpose than a job or a career. Purpose crosses disciplines. Purpose is an essential element of you.”

“Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you need to fulfil. Whatever you choose for a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”

On failure

“Sometimes you need to get knocked down before you can really figure out what your fight is and how you need to fight it.”

On gratitude

“You have to cherish things in a different way when you know the clock is ticking, you are under pressure.”

On celebrating life’s wins

“Savour the taste of your triumphs today, don’t just swallow them all whole without digesting what is actually happening here. Look down over what you conquered and appreciate what God has brought you through.”

On ageing

“The best advice about getting older? Just be thankful you’re not dead!”
