Global Citizen officially announced today that Beyoncé and Jay-Z will headline the first Global Citizen Festival to be held in Africa.
A host of activists, stars and world leaders will head to South Africa in December for the 2018 Global Citizen Festival. The show will be the culmination of the Global Poverty Project’s Mandela 100 campaign, a series of international events honouring the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela in his centenary year. Held at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg on December 2, the festival aims to raise money to end extreme poverty by 2030 and encourage a new generation to follow in Mandela’s footsteps by campaigning for change.
The line-up of performers at the event will include Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin and Usher. Oprah Winfrey will attend to deliver a keynote address remembering Mandela, while Naomi Campbell will serve as host alongside Forest Whitaker, Sir Bob Geldof, Gayle King and Tyler Perry. “The world is now connected to such a degree that it is no longer possible to put our head in the sand and pretend our brothers and sisters do not exist,” said Campbell at a press conference this morning. “We are all in this together. Let us approach these challenges with positivity, hope and excitement, without bowing down to those who would turn the clocks back 100 years.”

Music fans can win free tickets to the festival from August 21 by signing up on Globalcitizen.org and asking world leaders to make major investments to end global inequality. Donations will go towards increasing access to nutrition, ending tropical disease, reducing HIV/AIDS transmission rates and providing safe sanitation worldwide.
