Over the weekend, Beth Models hosted its 12th edition of the Aquafina Elite Model Look East and West Africa; the competition, originally limited to Nigeria, expanded into East and West Africa this year for its 12th edition, hosting the biggest players in the modelling, fashion and beauty industry to a beautiful night of glamour. Beth Models – organizers of the prestigious competition – founded by Elizabeth Elohor, has over the years discovered, groomed and propelled the best of talents, who have gone on to walk the most coveted international runway shows. A few of the notable models from previous editions include Mayowa Nicholas, Davidson Obennebo, Fei Fei Sun, Ruth Bell, Vittoria Ceretti, Greta Varlese, Benjamin Benedek, Victor Ndigwe, among many other star models.

This year, as part of Sunlight Nigeria???s women empowerment agenda, Sunlight Nigeria sponsored the Fashion Focus Talks. At the session, Mai Atafo was invited as the Sunlight facilitator for the event which took place at the Alliance Francaise | Mike Adenuga Building Ikoyi, Lagos on the 10th of September 2019.

This year???s theme, #BeyondCreativity, addressed the future of fashion and the need to drive conversations beyond the beauty of craftsmanship and instead evolve and hone-in on how even more value can be created within the ecosystem. Mai Atafo in his discussion stated that ???What makes fashion work is when you bring your pieces out and people are able to buy it because it is undeniable quality??? he continued by saying going beyond creativity, ???You have to understand your customers how they behave and how you can make them keep coming back to your brand???.

Lagos Fashion Week this year hosted a series of curated free talks in four (4) cities across Africa (Kigali, Abuja, Dakar and Lagos) for the Fashion Focus Talks Africa. In a bid to inspire collaboration amongst African creatives to achieve sustainable businesses and a thriving socio-economic industry, four (4) facilitators spoke about how collaboration among creatives can change the narrative about Nigeria. Speaking at the event were; Rukku Ladoja (Creative Director, Grey Project), Mrs Isioma Aihie (CEO, Grey Velvet), Joseph Ike (CEO, JZO), Mai Atafo (Creative Director, Mai Atafo) and Sanyade Okoli (CEO, Alpha African Advisory).

This year, through the platform that Lagos Fashion Week offers, Sunlight is empowering women to empower others. From now till October 2019, Sunlight is partnering with two more designers, sponsoring a collection to be sold during the LFW 2019. These designers ??? Morenikeji Akinsola and Chichi Emordi, train students in different areas of clothes production throughout the year. The proceeds of the sales at Lagos Fashion Week will be going into their business as a way to further their empowerment agendas.

Just as of late she was announced?? the first woman of colour?? that will be launching her fashion label under LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a popular French luxury goods that have managed many notable brands over the past years and her line will be the first new line created by the group since Christian Lacroix in 1987.

She first started off collaborating with Puma, and then released her beauty line in partnership with LVMH and dropping it like it???s hot with her new Savage X Fenty lingerie line. The world can???t wait to see what she has to offer with her new line Called Fenty which was a name gotten from her last name which a lot of people didn???t know about. It???s been announced that the brand will be based in Paris and the line will include ready to wear clothing, shoes and accessories and its set to debut this spring 2019.

KENNETH IZE’S COLLECTION FOR ARISE FASHION WEEK 2019

The versatility of African textiles keep evolving through the eyes of numerous designers; one of such textiles is the Aso-Oke (hand-woven fabric), which originates from the South Western part of Nigeria.

Nigerian Designer, Kenneth Ize, fully explores the flexibility of the Aso-Oke for his brand. He showcased the SS19 collection at the Arise Fashion Week, where top models Naomi Campbell, Alton Mason and Liya Kibede walked the runway in his designs. Nigerian Artiste Burna Boy was also spotted wearing a piece from the line for his performance at Coachella 2019.
