Last night, Nigerian singer-songwriter, Burna Boy became the 14th winner of the Best International Act award at the BET Awards. The Afro-fusion singer was nominated alongside South Africa’s AKA, the UK’s Giggs and Nigeria’s Mr Eazi.
Although Burna walked the red carpet, the star didn’t stay at the event long enough to receive his award; his mother, Bose Ogulu accepted the honour on his behalf, giving a short-but-powerful speech while she was at it.

“Thank you BET. Thank you Africa, because that’s the constituency for which we got noticed in the first place, ” she said. “The message from Burna, I believe, will be that every black person should please remember that you were Africans before you became anything else.”
Burna Boy himself took to Instagram to express gratitude at the win. “Thank you @BET @BET_INTL,” he said. “Thank you Africa and everyone that’s been supporting. I am not crazy on awards, but this one means a lot!!”
