ZOZIBINI TUNZI MAKES AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT ON BLACK HISTORY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORIES

There are so many reasons Zozibini Tunzi is officially our favourite Miss Universe. She’s brilliant, knowledgable and outspoken on issues that really matter – like Black lives. In honour of Black History Month, the sitting queen wrote in a post on Instagram about her pride as a Black woman and the importance of telling our stories – both past and present.

“Happy Black History Month! I’m not African American but I am a proud black woman and I understand the struggles black people went through and still have to go through for us to be where we are today, she wrote. “I think it is so important for us to understand where we come from because it is through that, that we can know where we are going.”

Zozibini also quotes African-American activist and founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund, Marian Wright Eldeman, saying, “I understand that like […] Edelman said, “we cannot be what we cannot see”, which is why it is important to celebrate black success and excellence. With that, I hope you enjoy every bit of this month and I hope these conversations extend way beyond 29 days 🖤”

The South African model, who had previously been crowned Miss South Africa 2019, won the title of Miss Universe in December 2019.
