From ancient Egypt to 16th century Europe, makeup has been used for centuries by both men and women. So why is it that today we typically only associate makeup with women? Well, just like Covergirl in 2016, there’s another brand that is moving with the changing times, and even better with an African man! In game-changing news, South African choreographer and radio personality Somizi has become the first African man to become the face of a global make up brand – Black Opal South Africa
Somizi shared the groundbreaking news on his Instagram page on Tuesday saying:
“Iconic moment. Boundaries have been broken. Ladies and gentlemen I’m honored to announce @blackopalsa personality The first male to represent a make up brand. #blkopalxsomizi when God shows up. He shows off”
In an interview with SowetanLIVE, head of marketing and PR at Black Opal, Busi Xaba explains that they chose Somizi as the new face of the brand because he is confident and lively. “He is comfortable with himself and also comfortable with wearing make-up,” Xaba told the publication.
A media release by Black Opal states that the partnership with Somizi has been signed for an initial one-year period. Somizi will endorse the company’s make up products for the duration of the contract.
