Liya’s step to the limelight is recorded to have been in 2000 when Tom Ford asked her for an exclusive contract to model for the Gucci Fall/Winter collection; she has since then graced a number of magazines including Vogue and Time’s Style & Design.
In 2003, she became the only Ethiopian that served as a face for Estee Lauder. Liya has worked with several brands from Lacoste to Calvin Klein; she also made the Forbes List of the World’s 15 Top-Earning Supermodels, ranking the 11th on the list.
As an actress, she has also starred in a number of films like Desert Flower, The Good Shepherd, and Lord of War, where she delivered outstanding performances.
She is an advocate for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and was appointed in 2005 as the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for this cause. She has a foundation, Liya Kebede Foundation and was named the Glamour’s Woman of the year in 2013.
